Chapter 12: March

I stood on the curb with the car door open and rain coming in sideways.

Beckett got out and came around the hood.

He had no umbrella.

He stopped an arm's length from me, in the wet, with his hair going dark.

"No cameras," he said. "No check. I've had nothing to drink since lunch."

"Then say it."

"It wasn't a mistake."

The rain was loud on the roof of the car.

I did not move.

"I called it one because I was scared out of my mind," he said. "I woke up with my arm across you and the whole room was gray and quiet, and I thought, this is the best I have ever felt. And I knew I'd ruin it. I always do."

"So you ruined it first."

"I handed you a schedule instead of saying anything true." His jaw worked. "You put your hair up in the elevator, and I watched you in the mirror. I thought: that's the last time she'll look at me like that."

"Like what?"

"Like I was somebody worth waiting for."

I heard my own breath catch.

"I've thought about that night every day since," Beckett said. "Every one. I paid six years of women to stand where you should have been, and I never once touched them. And I handed you forty percent of everything I own because it was the only way I could say I'm sorry that I could afford."

"I don't want the forty percent."

"I know."

"I want you to have said it in March."

"I know," he said again, quieter. "I'm saying it in July."

I should have gone inside.

I had a flight of stairs, a door and a lock, and an hour of thinking ahead of me.
