Chapter 13: Page Two

I did not sleep, and at eight I was in the lobby of Lowry Tower with my cane and a speech I could not start.

Beckett was waiting by the elevators.

He had shaved, and his eyes were red.

"Cora."

"Not here," I said.

"Is it bad?"

"It's mine to tell. I was going to tell it to you first, in a room with a door."

"Then tell me now. Upstairs can wait."

"It can't," I said. "At eight the hospital's lawyers send it to the board's counsel. It's eight now."

He looked at the clock over the desk.

He did not say a word.

He took my elbow, very lightly, and the elevator opened.

The boardroom was the one where I had signed my name, and the same nine directors sat around the same table.

This time there was a folder in front of each of them, thin and cream-colored, with my name typed across the tab.

Imogen sat at the far end with her pen already uncapped.

Dani was not there, and I was glad.

The director in the grey suit stood up before I had reached my chair.

"Thank you for coming, Ms. Treacy. I'll be brief."

"I doubt it," Imogen said.

He ignored her.

"This board accepted a transfer worth over a billion dollars, made by a man who had spent six days at a hospital bed. I asked for the records to see what he was so afraid of losing."
