Chapter 15: Flour and Soap

Cora's POV

"I want to say it out loud," I said.

Beckett waited.

"I've never said it. Not to Nate, not to a doctor who wasn't reading from a chart. I want to say it to my brother, and I want you there."

"Why me?"

"Because it was yours too."

His face moved, and he nodded once, and he did not try to speak.

It was ten past three in the morning when we reached the bakery.

The ovens had been lit for an hour, and the back room smelled of yeast and hot sugar.

Nate was shaping rolls at the steel table.

He looked up, saw Beckett behind me, and put the dough down slowly.

"Cora. What happened?"

"Sit down, Nate."

"I'm fine standing."

"Please."

He wiped his hands on his apron and sat on an upturned crate.

I stayed on my feet because I was afraid that if I sat I would never get up.

"When I fell," I said, "I was nine weeks pregnant."

My brother did not move.

"I didn't know. The hospital told me on the third day. The baby was already gone."

The oven fan hummed.

"It was Beckett's," I said. "From one night in March. I told nobody, because I thought nobody needed to know. Today a man read it off a page in front of nine people."

Nate stood up so fast the crate tipped over.

He did not look at Beckett, and I was grateful for it.

He crossed the floor in three steps and put both his floury arms around me.

"Oh, Cor," he said into my hair. "Oh, Cora. Why didn't you tell me?"
