Chapter 21: On the Steps

By seven in the morning the post had three million views, and my phone had stopped being mine.

Strangers called me a liar in the comments.

Others sent me the name of a grief group, and a few told me about their own losses.

I read every line standing at Beckett's window, in his shirt, while he made calls in the next room in a voice I had never heard him use.

"Cora," he said, when he came back. "Tell me what you want to do. Not what the lawyers say."

"I want to answer her."

"Where?"

"On the steps of the tower."

He did not argue.

At nine I stood on the wide stone steps of Lowry Tower with my cane in one hand and nothing in the other.

There were forty cameras and a crowd that kept growing.

Nate stood three steps below me, in his apron, because he had come straight from the ovens.

Dani and Imogen stood on my left.

Beckett stood behind me, and he didn't touch me.

I had written nothing down.

"My name is Cora Treacy," I said. "The page you saw is real. Yesterday someone stole it from my medical file and posted it to make money from my worst day."

The cameras clicked.

"Two months ago I was pushed down eleven marble stairs. I was nine weeks pregnant, and I didn't know. I lost the baby in that hospital. I told no one for months, because I didn't have the words."

My voice held, and I was surprised by it.

"I'm saying them now. I lost a child. It was real. Nobody gets to call it a payday."
