Chapter 22: Say It Where They Can Hear

Beckett's POV

At noon I walked into the Lowry Grand ballroom, where two hundred reporters sat in the same gold chairs as the shareholders had.

I had no notes.

Imogen sat in the front row with her arms folded, and her jaw was clamped.

Cora stood at the very back by the doors, with Nate and Dani.

I had asked Dani to bring her and had told no one else why.

I went up to the podium and put my hands on both edges.

"My name is Beckett Lowry," I said. "For eleven years I've run this company, and for six of them I ran it on the back of one woman's work without ever saying her name in public. Today I'm saying it."

The cameras came up.

"Cora Treacy kept my life in order. She wrote my apologies and paid my debts and lied to my mother for me. She did it so well that I didn't see it was a job. I thought it was weather."

Someone near the front laughed uncertainly.

I did not.

"For six years I let a number of women believe I loved them. I never did. I gave them keys and apartments so that people would stop looking at what I was actually doing, which was hiding. Two of those women are part of this story. One of them is in custody this morning. I helped build that. I own it."

I looked at the cameras.
