Chapter 8: The Wrong Cuff

Beckett's POV

My sister came into my office at seven the next morning and shut the door with her foot.

"You didn't sleep," Imogen said.

"I slept."

"You slept in that shirt. I can see the sofa pattern on your cuff."

I looked down.

I was wearing last night's shirt, and the left cuff was buttoned wrong, which I had noticed twice and ignored twice.

She dropped into the chair across my desk and set a coffee in front of me.

"Dani is eating breakfast in my kitchen. The security guard has proposed to my housekeeper. Tell me what you want to do about Thursday."

"I want to cancel the booking and have Tanya carried off the roof."

"No, you don't," Imogen said. "Cora wants to play the clip on the screen behind the stage. She sent me the plan at five this morning, with footnotes."

"With footnotes."

"She numbered the sponsors."

Something in my chest eased, and I hated how much.

Imogen watched me.

She has watched me for thirty-three years, and she is the only person who is allowed to.

"I'm going to say something, and you're going to hate it," she said.

"Go ahead."

"You've paid for six years of women you never touched."

I picked up the coffee.

"That's not true."

"Beckett. I run your books. Every one of those penthouses was a line item. Not one of those women ever went to Aspen with you, or to Tokyo. They got keys and a card, and you went home alone."

"They were company."
