Chapter 13: Suspended
The director of records kept her word before noon.
She met us in a Mercy General conference room on a Saturday, a gray woman in a raincoat with a notary beside her.
She laid the forged page next to a clean copy of the hospital's real letterhead and tapped the stamp.
"Whoever made your Exhibit C used an old scan," she said.
Then she signed an affidavit with a pen she had brought from home.
"Twenty-six years," she told me, capping it. "Nobody forges my hospital and walks out clean."
Stewart's lawyer read the affidavit twice in the parking garage.
He was the same man Stewart had threatened to fire, and he had the grace not to mention it.
"This goes to three places," he said. "The family court, the Medical Board, and Harborview's partners."
"Partners meet Monday at eight," I said. "Bradley told me once. He hates it."
Monday at eight, we walked into the Harborview conference room without being announced.
Twelve people sat around a glass table with coffee and tablets.
