Chapter 24: Home
Freddie's bag, it turned out, had been packed for coming home.
The nurse met us on her porch at half past five, in her robe, with the cat in her arms.
Freddie stood at her side in his raincoat.
He held the small blue backpack against his chest with both hands.
"He's been up since four," she said. "He wouldn't take it off. He kept saying it over and over."
"What did he say?" I asked.
"Home," said Freddie, to the sidewalk.
Stewart could not speak.
I knelt on the cold step with my palms open on my knees and said, "Home is a good word."
Freddie looked at the ring on my hand.
He looked at it for a long time, the way he looked at the clock over the stove.
Then he reached out and touched the gray stone once with one finger, and nodded.
We walked him across the street in the dawn with the streetlamps still on.
