Chapter 20: The Board
The board room was on the second floor of Warehouse One, above the scales, and it had no windows.
Twelve captains sat at a long table of dark wood.
At its head sat the empty chair that had been Chak's father's, with a small brass plate on the back.
Wiroj stood at his place on the right with his jade ring and his folder and an air of long-suffering patience.
"The matter is simple," he said. "The head of the house was shot and nearly died. He lay for three weeks unable to act. His house on the river is full of strangers. A pregnancy that may or may not hold. A boy off the street." His eyes passed over Phat, standing by the wall. "I propose a steward until the heir is born and sound. I volunteer."
"Second," said a captain in a grey coat.
Chak had not yet sat down.
He stood at the foot of the table, in a black suit, without a tie, with a bandage-line showing at the collar.
