Chapter 6: Dinner With Uncle
Wiroj Lertsiri arrived for dinner at seven, with a lawyer's briefcase and a jade ring he turned while he talked.
He was fifty-eight, silver-haired and soft-voiced, and he kissed Pim's hand at the door.
"The vessel," he said warmly. "How lovely to meet you at last."
Pim's smile did not move.
"Pim," she said. "My name is Pim."
"Of course it is."
Phat stood behind her with a dish of morning glory in his hands and decided he hated this man in under a minute.
The long teak table had been laid for four.
Chak sat at the head, and Wiroj on his right, and Pim across from Phat on the left.
Mee ate in the kitchen with the dog.
Chak had put on a white shirt and rolled the sleeves to the elbow, and the dragon on his forearm looked blacker for it.
He had not looked at Phat once since they sat down.
Phat was keenly aware of this.
"I have the will with me," Wiroj said, over the fish. "It's good to read it together, at a family table, so that nobody can say later they were not told."
"I've read it," Chak said.
"You have. The guests have not." Wiroj opened the briefcase and took out a single sheet. "My brother's wording is very plain. 'The house, the docks and the name pass to my son Chakrit, if he has an heir of his body within his thirty-second year. If not, they pass to my brother Wiroj.'"
He laid the page flat.
"His thirty-second year ends on the fourteenth of August. That is the date. Not the ninth of August, not the twentieth."
"I know the date, Uncle."
"I only like to be clear. There is nothing sadder than a child who comes late." Wiroj smiled at Pim. "It would be a pity if the vessel were off by a few days. Women are unreliable about these things."
Under the table, a hand closed on Phat's thigh.
He nearly dropped his fork.
Chak's face above the white shirt was calm and bored, and his thumb stroked once up the inside of Phat's leg.
