Chapter 7: The Boss's Shoulder
Chak found the shooters on Wednesday at two in the morning, parked under the tamarind trees outside the science faculty.
He did not need Mee to point them out.
He walked across the road in his shirtsleeves with a cigarette he hadn't lit.
He opened the driver's door of the sedan and dragged the man out by his collar.
The second man scrambled for his coat.
Mee's hand came down on the back of his neck from the other side, and the gun clattered to the road.
"Thursday night," Chak said pleasantly. "Who paid you?"
"Boss, I..."
Chak put the man's wrist into the car door and closed it halfway.
The sound the man made was not a word.
"Khun Wiroj," he gasped. "Khun Wiroj, he said to fire at the car. Only the car. He said not to hit you."
"You hit me."
"The road was wet. It slid."
"Thank you for your honesty." Chak opened the door and let the wrist out. "Go home. Tell my uncle I'm having dinner with him on Sunday, and I'll bring my father's old knife to carve the duck."
They ran.
Mee picked up the gun, unloaded it, and tossed it into the canal.
