Chapter 14: What He Said No To
Alister's POV
Verna Eckert called my cell phone at six on Friday morning and asked me to come for coffee.
She had never once called me in fourteen years.
I went after my shift, in my work jacket, because I wanted to see what she would do with the hour.
The senior apartments on Front Street had a lobby with a fish tank and a bulletin board.
Her door was on the second floor, and she opened it before I knocked.
"Alister, dear," she said. "Wipe your feet."
The apartment was small and clean and smelled of lemon polish.
There was a china cabinet in the corner with a brooch case on its top shelf, and every pin sat in its own slot.
A bare nail on the wall over the sofa had a clear square beneath it where a picture had hung.
I saw her glance at it.
"That's where the plaque goes," she said. "On the twenty-seventh."
She poured tea into two cups with roses on them and set one in front of me.
I did not touch it.
On the table beside the sugar bowl was a green ledger, the kind a treasurer carries, and a yellow pencil sharpened with a knife.
