Chapter 26: On His Knees

Bancroft stayed on his knees in the middle of the boathouse floor.

He was staring at Posy.

"Mine," he said.

"Yours," Margo said. She had Posy tucked against her hip with one hand over the girl's ear. "Tillie's and yours. She was born early, and your mother had her taken."

"I didn't know."

"I know you didn't."

"Mother." He turned his head to Odile without getting up. "Is it true?"

"It is true that she is a Huntington," Odile said. "It is true that she has had every advantage. The rest is feelings."

He made a noise I had never heard from him.

Then he turned on his knees and came across the floorboards to me.

I stepped back, and Sam stepped with me.

"Tillie." His voice cracked on my name. "I didn't know, I swear I didn't. I'll give you everything. The shares, the house on Bellevue, the boat."

"I don't want them."

"My signature on whatever you want. Custody, her name, anything. I'll tell the police all of it tonight."

"You'll tell them anyway."

"Then let me be her father." He put his hands together in front of his chest. "Please. I've never asked you for anything else."

I looked down at him.

"You asked me to be quiet, over four funerals," I said. "You said you did it because you loved me."

"I did."

"You saw my real scans after the second one, Bancroft. You knew my body was fine, and you wrote me a note to keep me afraid."
