Chapter 7: The Inspector

The inspector came at nine on Monday, exactly as Odile had said.

She was a stout woman in a gray raincoat with a tablet, and she was not alone.

Behind her in the clinic lobby stood three of the clinic's board members, who had been called in early.

My friend had driven me, and she sat beside me in the waiting room with her arms crossed.

Sam stood by the front desk in a clean white coat.

He had slept three hours in the staff room, and he waited for the inspector to speak.

"Dr. Burdick," the inspector said. "I'm told there's been a complaint about your practice. Improper records, a patient treated without a referral, and an irregular relationship with a patient in your care."

"Which patient?" Sam said.

"A Mrs. Matilda Huntington."

I stood up.

"I'm Tillie Salisbury," I said. "I'm the patient. I'd like to be heard."

The inspector looked at the board members, who looked at the floor.

The oldest of them, a man with a gold pen, cleared his throat. "Mrs. Huntington, this is an internal matter."

"The complaint is about me. I think that makes me part of it."

I took out my phone and held it up.

"Yesterday I sat in a private study and Odile Huntington told me she would close this clinic by noon today. She told me to go home and end my pregnancy, or she would stop paying for my mother's care. I recorded all of it. May I play it?"
