Chapter 8: Internal Medicine

"Doctor," I said, "what is your specialty?"

He turned his head slowly.

"I beg your pardon?"

"Your specialty. The state keeps a list. I'd like the board to hear it from you."

The man with the gold pen was looking at the letter in his hand now, and not at me.

"I am a physician of internal medicine," the doctor said. "I have practiced thirty-one years."

"Internal medicine," I said. "Not obstetrics."

"I have delivered babies."

"Have you ever delivered one of mine?"

He didn't answer.

Sam stepped forward and spoke quietly, to the board and not to Bancroft.

"I examined Mrs. Salisbury at midnight on Friday and again on Saturday. She is oriented, she is calm, and she has made a clear medical choice. Her uterine wall measures eleven millimeters and is normal. I have the images."

"Your findings are one night old," the doctor said.

"Yours are six years old," Sam said. "I've asked for them four times. Where are your scans?"

"They are the family's property."

"Then it's the family's malpractice."

Bancroft's head snapped around.

"Tillie, tell him to stop."

"No."

The board members were now speaking in low, quick voices among themselves.

The man with the gold pen folded Bancroft's letter in half and handed it back to him.

"Mr. Huntington, we can't accept this. We'll hear from Dr. Burdick on any clinical question. Please take your physician and go."
