Chapter 15: Aberdeen
The trial evaluator called us the next morning.
His voice was flat and careful.
"In light of new information, your company's suspension is lifted," he said. "The field trial is closed, but the board will give you a blind test at Aberdeen Proving Ground with the other finalists. Tuesday."
"Tuesday," I said. "This Tuesday?"
"Is that a problem?"
"No, sir."
I hung up and looked at Micah.
"Tuesday," he said. "We have four days to build six new kits and recalibrate everything. The CID still has our standards."
"Then we make new ones."
Thirty-one people slept at the warehouse that weekend.
Posy organized shifts and pizza and a playlist she called MUSIC FOR NOT GOING BANKRUPT.
On Tuesday she rode with us to Maryland in the back of the van, guarding a box of kits on her lap.
"I'm the social media department," she said. "This is a social media event."
"It's a classified test."
"Then I'll post about the parking lot."
At Aberdeen, by the marsh, the test room had a long table for the board, seven officers and civilians in a row.
At the other end were five numbered stations, one for each company.
A technician brought each of us twenty unlabeled water samples in brown bottles.
Some were clean.
Some weren't.
We had two hours to say which was which, and how bad.
The big defense contractor in the matching polo shirts set up at the station beside us.
Their lead engineer gave me the same little smile he had in the desert.
"Surprised to see you here," he said.
"I'm full of surprises."
"I heard."
Micah leaned over.
"Ignore him. His machine is the size of a mini fridge."
