Chapter 18: The Stone
The CID agent reached the top of the hill and stopped in front of the headstone.
She wasn't out of breath.
She looked at the cameras, then at the crowd, then at Eleanor.
"Eleanor Varley," she said. "I have a warrant for your arrest."
Eleanor laughed again, the same high laugh.
"For what? Singing a hymn?"
The agent unfolded the paper and read it out in a flat, carrying voice.
"Attempted murder of a general officer of the United States Army. Assault by poisoning of Lenora Sayle. Tampering with evidence at Fort Irwin. Conspiracy to commit arson."
Each charge landed on that hill.
The colonel's wife sat down on the bench behind her, hard.
"You asked for proof, ma'am," the agent said. "Here it is."
She held up her phone so Eleanor could see the screen.
"Your right thumbprint, in the wax of a candle from the general's house. Stamped beside your music note seven years ago, when the wax was still soft."
Eleanor's lips parted.
"The same thumb on the water glass you threw at Ms. Sayle at Fort Myer, in front of two thousand people."
She swiped.
"You, in your sequined jacket, at three ten in the morning, opening Ms. Sayle's trailer with a key you signed out as 'the general's wife.'"
She swiped again.
"And the man you called from California at eleven forty the night the shed burned. He's in custody in Winchester. He's been very talkative."
Eleanor took a step back and her heel hit the base of the headstone.
She had nowhere left to go.
"Turn around, please," the agent said.
"Do you know who I am?" Eleanor's voice rose. "I have sung for every soldier on this continent. They love me."
