Chapter 21: Plea

"Okay," I said. "Ask it."

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

Then, from his other pocket, a bobby pin.

It was bent into a little crooked ring.

"Your hair came down that night, and another pin fell on the bench," he said. "I bent it into this at four in the morning, after you went home. I kept it in my desk drawer and I never knew what to do with it."

I couldn't breathe.

"The other one's real," he said. "From a jeweler. With a stone. Posy picked it out, so if you hate it, it's on her."

"Micah."

"I'm not asking you to make me a promise you'll have to keep alone," he said. "I'm asking you to let me be the one who's there. At the clinic. At the cemetery. At three in the morning. Every time."

He got down on one knee on the frosty roof.

It made a cracking sound.

"That was the roof," he said. "Not my knee."

"It was your knee."

"It was my knee. Lenora Sayle, will you marry me?"

"Yes," I said. "Get up before you freeze to it."

He stood up, and I took his face in my cold hands and kissed him.

His beard was full of frost and his mouth was warm.

He pulled me inside his open coat, against the heat of his chest, and kissed me.

I slid my hands up under his flannel shirt to his bare back.

He hissed at my cold fingers and didn't let go.

"Your hands," he said against my mouth.

"Warm them up."

He kissed my jaw, my throat, the spot under my ear that made my knees give out.

I pressed him back against the hatch and kissed him until we were both shaking, and not from the cold.

Below us, through the hatch, Posy's voice rang out.
