Chapter 5: Back at the Gates

I still had my arms around her.

I was still holding my best friend of seventeen years when I understood what she had just said.

I let go and gripped her wrist instead.

"Say it again."

Sabine smiled at me over my own shoulder, bright and sorry, and no longer anyone I knew.

"Let go, Willa. You'll bruise me."

Corvin's warriors were already at my back.

Three of them closed on her at once and pinned her arms.

She did not struggle.

She looked at the Warden, who had come across the grass with her face the color of ash.

"I'm under a truce flag," Sabine said calmly. "Joss sent me with a message. If you hurt me, you'll never hear it."

"Whose truce?" Corvin said.

"Mine."

Her eyes slid to him, unafraid.

"Joss asked me to say this to you, Alpha, and I'll say it clearly. Dawn Watch holds Moonwatch's east gate."

The Warden made a sound.

"Tobin Merrick took the gate an hour ago with two hundred of our loyal warriors," Sabine went on. "Your guards were told to stand down by the Warden's own seal, Madam Warden, forged, of course. It was easy. Nobody checks a seal at a time like this."

Forty Moonwatch witnesses were on their feet.

The Warden stared at her for a long time.

"My city," she said.

"Is safe, so long as everyone is sensible."

I wanted to put my hands around her throat.

"Where are the people I brought?" I said. "My one hundred and thirty-seven."

Sabine tilted her head.

"On the east wall," she said. "Every one of them. Standing in rows, so you can see them from the road."
