Chapter 14: Nine Marks of Silver

"Stand back, Ashfall," the Warden's captain said.

I did not stand back.

Ronan put a hand on my shoulder and I shook it off, and then I stopped because the Warden was speaking.

She sat in her carved chair under the box awning with the iron key across her knees.

The Alphas of the Compact had come out onto the grass behind her, and every one of them was watching.

"This purse was found in the bedroll of Bram Ostrow," she said. "Inside are nine marks of Ashfall silver, stamped with a burnt tree. Rogue coin. Nobody else here carries it."

"I carry it," Odessa said, coming up on her stick. "Half the high country carries it. Is that a crime?"

"It is when the tracker with the shaved head had the same marks in his boot."

Bram lifted his chained hands.

"I never saw that purse in my life," he said. "I've been sleeping next to a water barrel. Ask the barrel."

"Be quiet," the captain said.

Calista stepped forward, and her voice shook just enough.

"I saw him, Warden. Two nights ago, behind the Blackpine stable. He gave the tracker something and they spoke."

"Which night?" Ronan asked.

He had not raised his voice.

Calista turned. "Ronan, darling..."

"I slept in that stable both nights. Nobody came behind it."

"You were not watching every hour. You were..." Her eyes went to me, and then to his open shirt, and back. "Distracted."

A wolf laughed somewhere in the crowd, low and unkind.

The Warden raised the key and the grass went quiet.

"The tracker is in my cells," she said. "He will be questioned at noon tomorrow. Until then Ostrow is held under guard in the Ashfall tent. If the tracker names him, Ashfall forfeits its seat and the Games."

"And if he doesn't?" I asked.

"Then Alpha Strathmore's accuser has made a serious accusation against a Truce guest, and we will speak of that instead."
