Chapter 23: Six Words of Her Own
The voice came from inside my chest, and it was not a voice with words.
It was a feeling that stood up out of the dark and took the shape of a wolf.
The Moon fell on me, and the stones rang, and the world went white.
I was back in the Blackpine hall.
I was standing in the third row, in my pale green dress, with the empty cup in my hand.
I saw myself from the outside.
My lips were parted and my face was gray.
Ronan stood at the head of the table, begging me with his eyes to say something.
Everything in me was drowning in wool.
But under the girl in the third row, small and furious and wide awake, my wolf was standing at the edge of my mind with her teeth bared.
I heard her.
I heard what she had been saying for three years, which I had been too afraid to listen to.
No.
No, no, no.
Not these words.
Not him, not like this.
She was not trapped under the tea.
She had been fighting the answer the whole time.
The hushroot had taken my voice, yes.
But my wolf would not have said it with a voice either.
The light folded away.
I was kneeling in the grass in the ring of stones with my hands flat on the cold earth, and Ronan was beside me, holding my shoulders.
"Eira."
"I'm all right."
"You went rigid. Your eyes were silver."
"I saw the Feast," I said.
I could hear my own voice shaking.
"The tea took my mouth. It didn't take my answer. She had already refused. My wolf never wanted to say it, Ronan. Not that night, not once in three years."
