Chapter 7: Prove It

"I asked you," I said.

"Yes."

"To do this. To take my whole life."

"To keep you from remembering it." Ewan stayed in the doorway with his hands open at his sides. "You swallowed the root yourself, Rowena. A handful, raw, from Nan's jar. You were bleeding through your shirt, and you hadn't stopped screaming for the boy."

I held the tag so tightly it creased.

"I don't believe you."

"I know."

"Why would I ask that? Why would I ever ask to forget a child?"

"Because you couldn't breathe," he said. "Garrick had taken Jory out of your arms at the creek. You'd tried to run with him in the dark, after the lash, and his guards caught you at the water. They tore him away. He was screaming your name, and Garrick stood there and told him you were leaving because you didn't want him."

My stomach folded.

"You said it would be easier for Jory," Ewan said. "You said if you stayed in his head as the woman who walked out, he'd get over you faster. You said you couldn't be a stranger he'd miss. You said you'd rather be nothing to him than the thing that hurt him."

"That's not me."

"It was you, that night."

"And the rule?" My voice cracked. "Never cross the water."

"So you'd never meet him on the other bank."

I laughed, and it was an ugly sound.

"The root should have faded by spring," I said. "Nan told me. It lasts a season. After that I was supposed to wake up and choose."
