Chapter 10: The Cake Plate

"My birthday," I said. "The cake."

"The cake plate."

Darian stood and went to the window.

He kept his back to me, and I understood that he could say it only that way.

"Joan had baked that lemon thing," he said. "You came into the kitchen in the green dress. I was holding the plate, and you reached out to take it, and your fingers touched mine."

"There was a spark."

"There was a spark." He turned his head. "You laughed. You said, 'Static,' and you wiped your hand on your dress."

"I said it because you looked so strange."

"I looked strange because my wolf stood up inside me and said: Mine."

I waited.

"He had never done that," Darian said.

The fire popped.

I could not feel my hands.

"Not once, not about anyone," he went on, very low. "And he said it about a girl I'd known since she was twelve, who had just turned eighteen, who I'd taught to ride a bike. I thought something was wrong with me."

"Darian."

"I let you walk out of the kitchen. I told myself that if you had felt it too, you would have said so."

"I felt it," I said.

His head came round.

"I felt it all the way to my elbows. I thought it was the weirdest thing that had ever happened to me. And then you backed up two steps and looked at me as though you'd seen a ghost, and I thought..."

I stopped.

My voice wasn't working.

"What did you think?" he said.

"That you were horrified."

"Cal."

"I was eighteen and I'd been in love with you a long time, and you looked at me as if you'd stepped on something. So I made a joke, and I told myself I'd never make you look like that again."
