Chapter 12: Withdrawal
Mack drove up the valley road that afternoon in a hatchback with a bumper sticker that said I BRAKE FOR TOADS and a cooler of activated charcoal on the passenger seat.
He stopped at the gate, looked at the two sentries who had gone for their rifles, and said, "I have a note from the Alpha."
I had written it myself.
Darian had signed it with his left hand, since the right one was shaking too hard to hold the pen.
"Is that the guy?" Mack said, climbing out. "The one who stood in a diner and breathed on you?"
"Mack."
"I'm only asking. He's bigger than the stool."
"I can hear you," Darian said from the porch.
"Good." Mack handed him the cooler. "Drink one of these every two hours. It tastes like a burned campfire. I'm sorry."
"I've had worse."
"You haven't," Mack said cheerfully, "but I appreciate the confidence."
I could have kissed him.
That night we shut the three of us into Darian's rooms on the top floor.
Delaney took the bed in the sitting room, with a bucket and the charcoal and a blanket pulled to her chin.
Darian took the big bed in the next room.
I took the chair between them.
By ten o'clock the burning had started for both of them.
I could hear it through the open doorway, a dull thudding like boots on a floor, and Delaney's breath coming in short hard hitches.
"Don't talk," I told her. "Count the ceiling boards."
"There are eleven."
"Then count them again."
In the bedroom, Darian lay on top of the covers in a pair of old sweatpants and nothing else, staring at the ceiling with his jaw set and sweat standing on his chest.
