Chapter 14: Rosewater
Dunstan set the tray on the end of Joan's bed and began to pour.
"Sit, sit," he said. "You look wrung out, Darian. Delaney, darling, you're far too pale."
Nobody sat.
The six wolves behind him filled the doorway from frame to frame.
"We're taking Joan home," Darian said.
"Of course you are." Dunstan held out a cup. "I'd never keep a sick woman from her own bed. But she is very ill, you know. Wolfsbane is a terrible thing."
Nobody in the cellar moved.
Delaney drew a breath.
Dunstan raised a hand to her without looking.
"Hush. Let a man finish." He smiled at Darian. "There is a remedy. It's old, and my healers keep it. It would take her through to dusk and past it. I'll give it to you the moment you stand in front of both packs and claim my daughter."
"You poisoned her," Darian said.
"I said nothing of the kind."
"You just did."
"I said wolfsbane is a terrible thing. Lovely bit of poison, the world has so many." Dunstan set the cup down. "Claim Delaney, and Joan lives. Don't, and I am very sorry, but I am not a magician."
I stepped in front of Darian before I knew I was going to.
"No," I said.
"Ah. The nurse."
"Give it to us now, or I'll walk out of this cellar and tell every wolf at your gate what you just said."
"And they'll believe a human?" His voice was kind. "My dear, they'll believe the man who feeds them."
He reached into his coat and took out a small brown bottle.
I knew the shape of it before I saw the label.
He pulled the stopper, tipped the whole bottle onto the base of the hot lamp, and the cellar filled with rosewater.
