Chapter 21: Redfall's Daughter
Calla's POV
The three elders conferred for the length of time it took the torches to burn down a finger's width.
Nobody left the meadow.
Dunstan knelt in the trampled grass, with his hands tied behind him by his own wolves, and looked at the ground.
Darian stood beside me in a borrowed coat, with Joan's hand in his and his leg healed to a long pink line.
The oldest elder stood up.
"Dunstan Westerfield," he said. "You have carried wolfsbane in your coat in a Carraway house. You have poisoned a wolf of this pack and a human who was under our roof, and you meant to kill the first before witnesses. You have lied to the elders and used the Alpha's voice to silence a witness."
"I did what was needed for Redfall," Dunstan said hoarsely.
"You did what you wanted for yourself. As your own wolves have seen." The elder drew a breath. "You are stripped of your pack. You are outlawed from the lands of every pack that keeps the old law. You go from this meadow tonight with what you stand in, and if you set foot on Carraway ground again, you will not be taken before an elder."
A great sound went up from the east side.
It was not a cheer.
It was lower, and longer, and it went on until Dunstan lifted his head.
He looked for someone to look back at him.
Nobody did.
Two Redfall wolves cut the cord at his wrists, and he stood up.
He was an old man in torn trousers.
"Delaney," he said, in his old warm voice. "Darling."
She stood with her arms folded tight across her stomach.
"Papa."
"You'll come with me. You're all I have."
