Chapter 14: The Pantry Key

Wynn's POV

Dain told me in the corridor outside my room, standing, with his back against the wall.

He gave me every word Halvard had said, and he did not soften one.

Halvard meant to be at the Council table first, with his own story ready.

"The Council will be here within the week," he said. "He wants them to find a King who burned a pack on purpose."

"And one thing more." His jaw tightened. "Hollowmere's Alpha yielded to him, Wynn. Halvard killed him after he knelt."

I stood very still.

Hollowmere's Alpha.

I had never once asked who he was.

I had only known I was from Hollowmere, with nothing else attached.

"What was his name?" I said.

"I don't know. Halvard never said it. The roll only says Alpha."

"Thank you for telling me."

"You said everything."

"I did." I looked at his face. "Go and find Ansel. Write it down while it's fresh, in front of a witness, so nobody can say you changed your story later."

He nodded and went.

I stood alone in the corridor and understood that I had just given him an order and he had taken it without a word.

Then I went downstairs, because I had no idea what to do with my hands.

The pantry was off the kitchen passage, a narrow room of shelves and sacks and cold stone.

I had gone in only to be somewhere with a door.

Ottilie was standing by the flour bins in her apron, with a cup on a tray in front of her.

She looked ten years older than she had a week ago.

"Don't," I said.

"It's only tea. Real tea."

"I'm not going to drink anything you hand me, ever again."

"No." Her mouth trembled. "No, I thought not."

She put both hands flat on the table.

"I've waited four days to find you alone. I have a great deal to say, and I don't know how much of it you'll let me finish."
