Chapter 15: The Old Study

The letter was one page, folded in three.

It was dated the week before the raid, in a broad slanting hand, and it was not long.

*My daughter. If you read this, I could not tell you myself. Your mother's ring is under the deeds. The river is yours, and so is the north hill. Do not marry for them. Choose whoever you would choose if you owned nothing.*

He had signed it with his name, and then with the word *Papa*.

I sat down on the dusty floor of the old study with my back against the table leg and read it five times.

The ring was under the deeds, a thin gold band, too big for any of my fingers.

I put it on my thumb.

I do not know how long I was there.

When the door opened, I did not look up, because I knew the sound of his step.

"Ansel said you hadn't come back," Dain said. "Wynn."

He crossed the room and knelt, and he stopped a foot short of me.

I held the letter out.

He read it with his lips pressed together, and when he finished, he held it for a moment longer than he needed.

"Choose whoever you would choose if you owned nothing," he said quietly.

"I own a river now."

"You owned it before."

I looked at him.

He was kneeling on a dirty floor in a King's coat, and he had come the second Ansel told him.

I stood up and shut the door and turned the key.

"Wynn?"

"The Council is coming," I said. "They may take you off the throne. They may take me out of the one place I've ever had a say."

"Yes."

"I don't want to spend tonight afraid."

His eyes went gold, and then he shut them.

"Tell me what you want."

"I want to be the one who decides what happens."

I took his wrist and put his hand flat on the table behind him.
