Chapter 18: The Truce

Corinna's POV

Dane signed the truce lying on his back in Molly's kitchen.

He had a pillow under his knee, and the pen shook in his grip.

Two Blackwater elders sat across the table from him.

The third had gone with the beta, and nobody said her name.

"The beta ran at dawn," the first elder said. "Half the pack crossed with him. Most of them have come home since, and twelve have not."

"Glad to hear it," Dane said.

"The pack asks that the ferry dock be rebuilt at our cost."

"Good."

"And the pack asks that the name Corinna Marrin be struck from the list of enemies of Blackwater."

Everybody looked at me.

I was leaning on the counter with a cup of tea I hadn't touched.

"I'm not asking for my seat back," I said.

"We know."

"I'm not asking for anything."

"You asked for a great deal at the Moot," the second elder said.

For the first time her face showed something close to respect.

"We're finally answering."

Dane signed.

The elders signed after him, and the old paper went out into the hall to be sealed.

I walked outside before anyone could look at my face.

It was near dusk, and the porch boards were damp.

Brynn was standing at the gate.

She was alone with Wyatt in a sling across her chest, and a duffel bag at her feet.

Her braid was gone.

She had cut her hair to her jaw, badly.

Her face under it was thin, and it showed me none of the warmth she used to.
