Chapter 17: Don't Hand It to Me
"Then I'll win," I said.
"Honey."
"Marva. Midnight on the twentieth. The show goes off the air at seven. I'll have five hours to spare."
"The show doesn't hand you a million dollars in a paper bag at seven."
"Then they'll hand me a letter that says they owe me one. You'll take a letter."
There was a long pause.
"I'll take a letter," Marva said. "Go to bed. Not that bed."
She hung up.
Gannon turned the tug around in the dark without a word.
I stood beside him and watched the port come back.
"Don't," I said.
"I didn't say anything."
"You're doing math. I can hear it."
He didn't deny it.
I slept in his bunk that night, alone.
He slept on the galley bench, because he's a gentleman and because I told him to.
He did the math at breakfast instead.
Friday morning he made eggs in the cast iron pan and set a plate in front of me, and next to it he put a folded check.
I unfolded it.
Three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
