Chapter 22: My Mother's Phone
I stood in the alley holding a bag of trash.
My mother stood in the doorway holding nothing.
I'd never once seen her without a purse. She had it tonight, a small one on a chain, hanging at her hip.
"You're barred," I said.
"I know."
"From the bar. Not from my kitchen."
I threw the trash in the dumpster and held the back door for her.
She stood in the middle of it, in her grey sweatshirt, and looked at the one couch and the stacked index cards on the coffee table and Dad's WORLD'S OKAYEST TEACHER mug in the dish rack.
She touched the mug.
"You kept it," she said.
"You threw it out. I took it out of the trash."
She sat down at my little kitchen table and set her purse on the corner of it.
"A man came to the house this morning," she said. "In a baseball cap."
"I know. He came here at noon."
Her face crumpled.
"Then you know what I signed."
"I know you signed it in his office between patients. I know you didn't read it."
"He said it was for the new house." She pressed the heels of her hands into her eyes. "Nine hundred thousand dollars, Tilda. If Hal doesn't pay, they take the house. My name's on everything. They take me."
