Chapter 13: One Courthouse Wife
"Explain it to your son," I said. "He's the one who wet himself in the dark."
I hung up.
I drove home with Noah asleep in the back seat, one hand clutching my apron string.
I carried him upstairs and ran him a bath.
He fell asleep again in the towel before I could get his pajamas on.
I sat on the floor next to his bed until the sun came up.
Jonathan didn't come that day.
He didn't come the next day either.
He came on Sunday.
His parents were already there. His mother had insisted on Sunday lunch.
"This family eats together," she'd said on the phone. "Whatever's left of it."
So there we were.
Pot roast on the table. Noah drawing piano keys on a napkin.
Jonathan's father at the head, reading the paper like nothing had happened.
