I did not ask Preston.

I had asked him once already, and he had enjoyed it too much.

So on Saturday morning I waited outside the dining hall until Brooks came out alone with a banana in one hand and his phone in the other.

"Brooks."

"Not today, Rory."

"One question."

"I'm not allowed to talk to you." He started walking. "Preston said."

"Preston said you can't talk to me?"

"He said I could say hi." He frowned at his own words. "Hi."

I fell into step beside him.

"Who sewed the button on my jacket?"

Brooks stopped so suddenly the banana swung.

"What button?"

"The top one. It was loose for a year. Now it's sewn on in black thread." I watched his face. "Who did it?"

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"You were in the front row Thursday. You were in the coffee place yesterday. You've been in every room Preston has been in for a week."

"So?"

"So you'd know who the friend is." I kept my voice light. "The one who owes him a favor."

He looked over my shoulder at the quad, and I saw him check that nobody was filming.

"It's Preston's sister," he said. "She sews. She does costumes for the theater club."

"Preston doesn't have a sister."

"He has a cousin."

"Brooks."

"A neighbor." He took a step back. "Look. I don't know, okay? He just had the jacket. I wasn't there when he got it. He took it out of the locker, I mean. Out of the, you know." His face went red up to his hairline. "He got it from a friend."
