Chapter 17: What My Mother Said
I opened the pouch on the blue step, in the cold morning.
Something round and pale rolled into my palm.
A stone, the size of a robin's egg, on a plait of old leather cord.
It was white, but not white.
When I turned it, a blue light moved under the surface.
"Moonstone," Mags said. "The heir's stone. Your mother wore it every day of her life."
"It's warm."
"I know." Her voice was rough. "It went cold in my hand the night of the fire. It's been cold in my coat eighteen years. This morning, at your door, it warmed up against my ribs."
I closed my fingers over it.
The light came through my knuckles, faint and blue.
"It knows you," Mags said.
Behind me, I heard Aldric sit up on the blankets.
He came to the door with a blanket around his hips and looked down at my hand.
He didn't say anything.
He just put his hand on the small of my back, very lightly, and left it there.
And I remembered.
It came the way the smell of pine had come back on the logging road, in layers.
The hall, eighteen years ago.
My mother waking me in the dark with her hand over my mouth.
Smoke under the bedroom door.
The blue doors, and orange light behind them.
A man standing in the doorway at the end of the long room, with a torch in a gray-gloved hand.
He didn't come in.
He just stood and watched it burn.
And under the smoke, that sweet white smell.
Gardenia.
My mother knelt in front of me in her nightgown.
Her face was black with soot, and her eyes were gray like mine.
She took the stone off her own neck.
She didn't give it to me.
She gave it to Mags, who was standing behind me with her arm already burning.
