His Pups Called Me Mama. He Called Me Nobody. novel · Chapter 6 of 24
Chapter 6: The Burned Hall
Six hundred wolves waited for my answer.
Arlo's arms tightened around my neck.
I looked up into those pale old eyes and smiled.
"Nobody," I said. "Ask the Alpha. That's what he's called me for five years."
Somebody on the Langtry bank laughed and turned it into a cough.
Alpha Mossgrave smiled back.
It didn't reach anywhere.
"Nobody," he said, as if he were tasting it. "How modest."
Then Aldric was there.
He didn't push.
He just stepped into the small space between us, so that the old man had to look at his chest instead of my throat.
"She's under my protection while she's on my land," Aldric said.
"You severed her yesterday."
"And today she's under my protection."
The two Alphas stood there a long moment.
Nobody on either bank breathed.
Then Mossgrave inclined his silver head.
"Of course," he said. "Your land. Your rules. My daughter will stay with you, naturally, while we wait for your answers."
He walked back across the bridge.
Cordelia went white to the lips, and then she went after Aldric with her hand on his arm, talking low and fast.
I didn't wait to hear it.
I put Arlo down and knelt in the mud in Mags's rolled-up jeans.
"I have to go, bug."
His face crumpled.
"You said..."
"I said I'd come back. And I did. And I will again. I'm only over the north ridge."
"How far is that?"
"Close enough to hear you if you yell."
"Really?"
"Really. Don't test it at bedtime."
He laughed through his nose, which was what I wanted.
I kissed his forehead.
Clover was screaming "MAMA" from the back of the crowd and kicking the kitchen woman in the shins.
I blew her a kiss.
She caught it and shoved it in her mouth, which is what she'd always done, and I had to turn around fast and walk up the bank before I lost my face in front of six hundred wolves.
Mags drove us north, over the ridge, on a road the forest had eaten.
I knew where we were going.
I hadn't been back since I was eight.
The Silver Moon hall had been built of stone and silver pine on a meadow above a creek.
Now it was four black walls, roofless, full of fireweed.
