Chapter 27: Copies
Francesca ran the last ten yards of gravel.
The rear door of the black car opened before she reached the gate.
Ottavio stepped out onto the road with the recorder in his hand.
He turned it over once in his fingers.
"Benedetto and his little machines," he said.
"That's mine," Francesca said. "Give it back."
"It was your father's. Now it's mine." He glanced at her mother. "Thank you, my dear."
Her mother lowered her eyes.
He opened his fingers.
The recorder dropped onto the asphalt just outside the gate.
He set the heel of his polished shoe on it and leaned.
The plastic cracked.
He leaned harder, and the silver casing split along its seam.
Then he bent, unhurried, and picked the little cassette out of the wreckage.
He hooked a fingernail under the brown ribbon and pulled.
It came out in a long, shining curl.
He kept pulling until there was nothing left on the spool.
Francesca stood inside the gate and watched every inch of it go.
"There are copies," Francesca said.
Ottavio smiled.
"I know." He held out his hand behind him without looking.
