Two hundred glasses went up from the tables.
Francesca's didn't.
She pushed her chair back and stood.
"Before you drink to the next Ruggiero," she said, "I'd like the last one to say something."
Ottavio kept his raised.
"Francesca," he said pleasantly. "You weren't invited."
"I know. The elders voted."
She walked to the edge of the stage and up the three wooden steps.
Ottavio's driver started down the side aisle toward her.
The port captain stood up.
Then the North End captain, and Southie, and Revere, and Quincy.
Five captains on their feet at the front table, and the driver stopped where he was.
Francesca went past the head table to the easel.
Her mother half rose from her chair.
"Don't you touch that painting."
Francesca opened her clutch and took out her scalpel.
Michael came up the steps behind her without being asked.
He lifted the portrait off the easel and turned it around, so the back faced the hall.
Near the bottom corner, behind her own small face, there was a slight square bump under the patch.
Francesca slid the blade along the edge of it.
