Chapter 6: Pills

"Ask him what he did to his own father," Otto had said.

Margot asked in the car on Sunday, with the lake going by in the window.

"My father died," Elias said. "I wasn't there."

"That's not what I asked."

"It's the true half." He kept his eyes on the road. "Give me till Monday night. You'll get the other half from someone who isn't me."

"Terms say you don't lie."

"Terms say I don't say what isn't true. I'm not saying it. I'm asking for a day."

She turned back to the window and let it go.

It was the first thing she had let go in a week.

The Lake Forest Club had white tablecloths and a view of the eighteenth green.

Thaddeus had invited eight people to lunch on Monday, and every one of them was on the Ellery board.

He sat at the head of the table in a navy suit with his cane hooked over his chair.

Margot sat on his right.

Elias, on Thaddeus's invitation, sat at the far end.

"Thaddeus's taken to inviting the competition," one director murmured.

"Thaddeus's taken to inviting people who tell him the truth," Thaddeus said, and the table went quiet.

He rose, and he was steady, and he lifted his water glass.

"I built this company in a rented office with a hot plate and a telephone," he said. "I want you all to know I am in my right mind, whatever you've been told, and I intend to be at the vote on the twenty-sixth."
