Chapter 17: The Door Log
Noel put the phone down on the table, face up, and tapped the bottom line.
"Look at the terminal."
Fletcher leaned over his shoulder and read it.
Fenella read it from the other side.
Maddie read it upside down, which she'd been doing since she was six.
"Cold Room B," Fletcher said slowly.
"That terminal is hardwired. It's inside the cold room, behind a steel door, because it's the only machine allowed to delete retained samples." Noel could hear his own voice going fast. "Nobody can send that order from a laptop. Somebody had to be standing in there."
"And you were upstairs," Maddie said.
"I was on the floor of a closet. In his coat."
"So say that," Fenella said. "At the court. Say it loud."
"I'll say it. Then Clay says I'm lying." Noel turned to Fletcher. "And you say I was in the closet."
"And I'm on the charge sheet," Fletcher said. "A defendant's word is worth nothing at the furnace."
"Exactly."
Fenella threw up her hands.
"So you need a witness who isn't a defendant."
"I need a witness who isn't a person."
