Chapter 18: Call 911
Joanna's POV
The family courtroom smelled of floor wax and cold coffee.
I sat at the long table in Teagan's good gray coat, with Beatrice's lawyer on my left and Bennett one row behind me.
He wasn't allowed at the table.
His motion said so.
Across the aisle, Gavin sat with a new lawyer, a young one with a very expensive haircut, who had not read the file.
The judge came in, a woman with reading glasses on a chain and a face that had heard every kind of lie.
"Petitioner's motion," she said. "Go ahead."
The young lawyer stood.
"Your Honor, my client is the father of an unborn child. The respondent has concealed that child, she has taken up with his cousin, and she has put the pregnancy at risk by public stunts."
"Public stunts."
"She walked into a private gala in a hospital bracelet, Your Honor."
"I'm told the baby is healthy," said the judge, "so I'll assume the respondent knows her own limits."
A small noise came from somewhere behind me, and it was Teagan trying not to laugh.
"We ask for a paternity test, for sole custody on birth, and for an order barring Bennett Hargrove from the respondent's residence."
"Mr. Hargrove, your client's residence is where?"
"The respondent lives at the family home of his grandmother, Your Honor."
"Whose home is it, then?"
"His grandmother's."
"And she has asked the respondent to stay?"
The young lawyer stopped.
"She has, Your Honor," said Beatrice's lawyer, rising. "I'd like to be heard."
"I imagine you would."
He stood with a thin folder.
"The petitioner is not a victim in this case. He is the subject of it."
He passed up a single sheet.
"Exhibit A is a month of surveillance photographs of my client, taken by a man the petitioner paid. Exhibit B is the receipt."
The judge read it, and her face did not change.
