Chapter 8: The Ring
He was still on the steps in the morning.
Snow had settled on the shoulders of his camel coat, and his lips had gone a pale gray.
It was a quarter to nine, and the whole first-year cohort was coming up the walk.
The girl in the gray beanie got her phone out before she reached the door.
I came down the steps in Soren's parka with my own breath hanging in front of me.
"Dorinda," Winslow said.
He went down on one knee in the snow.
It was a good ring.
It was my ring, the one I had left on the dresser, in the same velvet box.
"I was wrong," he said, loud enough for the walk. "I should never have tested you. I've been up all night thinking about it. I'm so sorry."
A few people stopped.
Somewhere above us a window opened.
"I love you," he said. "Come home and marry me. I'll tear up the prenup. I'll do whatever you want."
I looked at the ring.
It was exactly the one I had wanted for fourteen months, and I felt nothing.
"Get up, Winslow," I said.
"Not until you say yes."
"You'll freeze."
"Then say yes."
The phones were all out now, a small ring of them.
I looked at his face, and I remembered something about it.
He had never once in four years said sorry first.
He was saying it now because forty strangers were watching.
"My mother asked me to tell you something," he said, softer, though he knew the phones could hear him. "The note on your father's house. She says it's gone the day you're my wife."
A girl near the front made a small, shocked sound.
