Chapter 11: Dario's POV

Dario's POV

My father received me in the study where he had thrown me out.

Nothing in it had moved.

The same green lamp stood on the desk, the same map of the lake hung on the wall, and the same chair waited for me to sit in it.

I stayed on my feet.

"You look tired," Aldo said.

"I've been up with your guest."

"My son's bride."

"Your ward. Stefano's victim. Choose the word you like."

He winced and sat down heavily behind the desk.

Six years had taken the weight out of his shoulders.

He still wore the gold signet ring on his right hand, the one that had passed from his father to him, and that would pass to Stefano.

"You told me she was alive," he said. "Then you sat at my table and let me bury her."

"You agreed to the coffin."

"I agreed because you asked me to."

"No. You agreed because it kept the alliance from breaking over a scandal."

He did not answer, which was an answer.

"I want to know something," I said. "Six years ago I came to this room with a plate number."

"Dario."

"A black Mercedes registered to Vincent Torrisi was on the Lakeside Highway the night her parents died. I put the report on your desk. You told me to burn it."

"I told you to leave it."

"And when I wouldn't, a ledger turned up in my accounts with my signature on it. Two hundred thousand dollars skimmed from the Family. I'd never seen it before."

"The ledger was real."

"The signature wasn't mine."
