Chapter 22: Alive
Nobody spoke.
A chair scraped, and a glass fell off the table and rolled.
I walked the length of the council hall in my funeral dress with every eye on me.
The thick lieutenant with the heavy jaw went the color of tallow.
I stopped at the foot of the table, beside the coffin.
I laid my hand on the sandbags.
"Gentlemen," I said. "I'm told I'm in here."
Someone behind me whispered a prayer.
Stefano's chair crashed back, and he was half out of it, and his eyes found mine.
I shook my head once.
He sat.
"That's her," Camille screamed. She was on her feet, and her chair was on the floor. "That is the informant. Seize her!"
"Seize who?" I said. "The girl you buried?"
"Daddy..."
"She's alive," Vincent said, very evenly, "and she has been talking to the police. This proves everything I said."
"Which police?"
He frowned.
"Camille showed you a phone," I said. "She says I wrote to a detective the night before the bridge. Where was that phone the night before the bridge?"
"In your hand."
"No." I turned to the table. "It was in Camille's bag. Stefano watched her carry it from the second night of the vigil."
"I did," Stefano said. It was the first thing he had said since I walked in. "Every night."
The housekeeper stood by the wall with her hands folded.
"She took it off the dresser herself," she said, clearly. "I saw her."
"Lies," Camille said.
"I'll show you what isn't," I said.
I nodded to Dario.
He reached, one-handed, for the remote beside the wall screen.
The screen lit up with the grey view from the estate's gate camera.
