Chapter 10: Ten O'Clock
Elliot didn't move.
He stood at the kitchen counter with his hands flat on the marble and looked at me.
"Merry," he said carefully. "What shot?"
"The one in the fridge door. The one with three vials and Colin's sevens on the labels."
His eyes closed for half a second.
"You remember," he said.
"I woke up Wednesday knowing everything."
I pulled off my wet gray coat, which I'd belted over Elliot's spare robe, and dropped it on the floor.
"I know the crash, I know my sister's number, and I know a hundred and forty mornings of Colin telling me not to be scared."
"How long have you known you know?"
"Since the clinic. Since your hand wasn't the hand I was used to."
My voice shook, and I made it stop.
"Here's what I worked out. Tuesday night I should have been wiped. Somebody gave me the shot, and I woke up whole. Either the drug stopped working on me, or somebody gave me something else."
"Merry..."
"Bridget is downstairs in a gray truck. I recorded a video on her phone this afternoon, ten minutes, everything I know. If I wake up blank tomorrow, she plays it to me, and I start again."
I took one step closer.
"So if you're one of them, do it. Give me the shot. I'm not scared."
I was.
My knees felt like water.
But someone had spent six weeks checking on a sticky note, and I had decided to find out what kind of man that made him.
Elliot walked to the fridge.
He opened the door and took out the white box and set it on the counter between us.
His hands were steady, which seemed to cost him something.
