Chapter 20: The Gala, Part Three

"She was driving," Colin said again, softer, because the room had gone silent on the last word.

"No," I said. "I was in the passenger seat."

I said it without a microphone, and it still reached the back wall.

"I told you to pull over. I said it three times. You laughed."

"You don't remember that. You have a brain injury."

"I remember it," I said. "I've remembered it for ten days."

The back doors banged open.

Bridget came down the aisle in her work boots, with a folder in one fist, and she didn't slow for anyone.

"This," she said, and slapped it onto the stage, "is the data download from the car's black box. The tow yard kept the wreck. I paid them four hundred dollars to unlock it."

She thumbed a page.

"Driver's seat weight, a hundred and eighty pounds. Passenger seat, a hundred and twenty. Speed at impact, ninety-one miles an hour. Brakes applied at the last quarter second."

"That proves nothing," Colin's father said.

"There's also this."

She laid down the second sheet, the handwritten one, with the coffee ring in the corner.

The older policeman took it out of her hand and read it, and his jaw set.

"That's our department's form," he said. "Somebody buried this."

A man at the front table said, "He was drunk?" in a voice like a slap.

Then Bridget turned to the screen and tapped it twice.

The raw crash photos filled the wall, a car folded against a guardrail with the driver's door crushed open.

Colin looked at them.

I watched him do the math, and I watched him realize that nobody was going to help him do it.

"You can't use that," he said. "It was obtained illegally."
