Chapter 21: Thirty Days

Elliot's POV

They kept me in a gray room for seven hours.

A detective with a paper cup asked me the same question in nine different ways, and I gave him the same answer nine times.

"Yes, I swapped the vial."

"Yes, I knew for five months."

"No, nobody made me."

Around two in the morning he slid a sheet of paper across the table.

It was the sworn statement I had mailed to the board a week ago, with a stamp on it, and a note clipped to the corner.

"This came to us before the gala," he said. "You walked in here already confessed. That counts for something."

"I don't want it to count."

"Mr. Rainier." He rubbed his eyes. "I've sat across from a lot of men. Most of them are sorry they got caught."

He didn't finish the thought, and I was glad.

At four he told me I could go.

I wasn't charged, not yet.

The board would suspend my license within the week.

The clinic had already sent a letter by courier to my building, saying I was terminated for cause.

I took the news standing up.

Down the corridor, through a door left open, I heard Colin's father's voice talking to a lawyer in a low, careful tone.

I didn't stop to listen.

The sky outside the station was the color of dishwater.

Merry sat on the front steps in Bridget's black dress with a police blanket around her shoulders and her knees pulled up.

She looked up when the door opened, and I stopped three steps above her.

I did not move closer.

"Hi," I said.

"Hi."

"Is Bridget..."

"She's getting the truck." She looked at her hands. "She said to tell you she's still deciding whether to hit you."
