Chapter 7: The Checkup

At eight on Day Three, Elliot's phone buzzed with a text from Colin.

*Checkup at 10. Dad wants to see her. Bring her in.*

Elliot read it twice.

"We have to go," he said. "It's routine. You go every third day."

I knew that.

Every third day, at ten, a man in a white coat shined a light in my eyes and said I was doing beautifully.

I had never once asked why a patient who forgot her life every three days was doing beautifully.

"Okay," I said.

Elliot drove with both hands on the wheel and said nothing.

The Crocker Clinic had a glass front and a fountain in the lobby.

I had been carried through those doors on a stretcher fourteen months ago, and I had walked out of them on Colin's arm every third day since.

Today I walked in like a woman who'd never seen a fountain.

"Wow," I said. "It's so pretty."

A nurse in pale blue took my elbow.

"Right this way, Miss Hartwell."

Elliot stayed in the lobby, because only family went back.

He caught my hand for a second as they led me away.

"Merry," he said.

"Yes?"

He seemed to have forgotten what he'd been going to say.

"Nothing. Go on."

The exam room was small and white.

A tall man in a gray suit stood by the window, with the same easy shoulders as his son.

He had silver at his temples, and he smiled.

Colin's father.
