Chapter 30: Christmas in Hickory
I looked at the line for a long time.
Then I looked at him.
He was sitting on the edge of the bed in the lamplight with his hands between his knees, waiting.
"You asked me in a notebook," I said.
"I asked you where I've been talking to you for three years."
"Then I'm answering out loud." I closed it and held it against my chest. "In front of my daddy. At Christmas."
"That's two weeks."
"You waited nine years for a clock."
He laughed and lay back on the bed with his arm over his eyes.
"Ask first," he said to the ceiling. "I did this to myself."
Three days before Christmas, Twyla's white car came down the gravel.
It was cold and bright, and the old men were in the barn wrapping the #4's engine for the winter.
They went quiet when she got out.
She didn't have pearls on.
She had on a plain wool coat, and she was carrying something under one arm in an old canvas bag.
Sutton came out of the barn wiping his hands.
I came out behind him.
