Chapter 6: The 500

I called Sutton at midnight.

He picked up on the first ring, with the hauler generator humming behind him.

"Look at the restart with eleven to go," I said. "The #17, going into turn one."

I heard him pull it up on his phone.

He watched it three times.

"Well," he said. "That's not a legal car."

"No."

"You going to call the series?"

"And tell them what? That the suspended engineer who got fired for cheating watched a replay in a motel and thinks her ex is cheating?" I pulled my knees up. "They'd laugh me off the phone, and they'd be right to. A replay's nothing. I need to see the part."

"Then we beat him with a legal car," Sutton said, "and you go see the part when they let you back in."

"That's six races."

"I waited nine years. You can wait six."

He said it.

It wasn't, and he knew it, and I loved him a little for saying it anyway.

Not loved.

Liked.

I hung up before I could think about which.

Sunday came up gray and windy.

Reba was on the roof by noon.

The old men were on the pit box in matching gray shirts Reba had bought at a feed store and lettered herself.

And I was on the seashell bedspread with the laptop, the TV and two phones, with a can of cold coffee from the broken machine.

Forty cars took the green flag in the Daytona 500.

The #4 started thirty-third.

By lap fifty it was eighteenth.

By lap one hundred it was eleventh, and the TV booth had started saying Sutton's name.

"He's coming up on the #17," Reba said.

"Tell him to be patient."

"Patience is not a Tillery family trait, sugar."

The first time, Crews blocked him on the high side going into turn three.
