Chapter 19: Table Nine

On Saturday night every one of Carberry's twenty-eight seats was full by seven thirty.

I was at the host stand with the reservation book, wondering what to do with my hands.

Ewan had said he would tell Dale to his face.

He had called him twice on Sunday and got voicemail both times.

The bell on the door rang at eight.

Dale came in first, in a cream suit I had never seen, with a champagne flute already in his fist.

Tabitha was behind him in white, with her phone out.

Behind her came the six Rotary men from table four, and four of their wives.

"Hubbard," I said. "Party of twelve."

"Table nine," Dale said, and winked. "I called ahead."

I seated them at the long table by the window, and I watched Dale look at every person in the room.

Then he stood on his chair.

The room fell quiet one table at a time.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" Dale boomed. "If I could have your attention for a toast!"

I started toward him.

Tabitha raised her phone.
